How We Ranked the Best Safeties Through Week 2
This update puts more weight on current-season performance through Week 2 than the earlier 2026-27 projection. Coverage, tackling, range, versatility, playmaking and how much responsibility each safety can handle all matter, but early-season form can now move a player significantly up or down the board.
The arrows track movement from the previous ranking. Green means the player moved up, red means the player moved down, and the number shows the number of tiers gained or lost. Players without an arrow remain in the same tier.
The list is still early enough that one or two strong games can create major movement. That is why some players have jumped three or four tiers, while others who began the year much higher have already fallen.
Tier 1: Best Safeties in the NFL Today
Tier 1 features Kyle Hamilton, Julian Love, Derwin James Jr., Jessie Bates III and Antoine Winfield.
Tier 1 contains the five safeties playing at the highest level in this Week 2 update. Four remain in the top group, while Julian Love is the major new arrival.
Kyle Hamilton
Kyle Hamilton remains in Tier 1 and continues to set the standard for the position. His ability to line up deep, work near the line of scrimmage, cover tight ends and contribute in pressure packages gives his defense enormous flexibility.
No movement is needed here. Hamilton entered the season in the top tier and has done enough through Week 2 to stay there.
Julian Love
Julian Love is one of the biggest early risers on the entire list, climbing two tiers into Tier 1. That is a major jump from the previous ranking and reflects how strongly his start to the season has changed his standing.
Love brings versatility, awareness and reliability on the back end. His ability to handle multiple responsibilities has pushed him into the league’s highest safety tier through two weeks.
Derwin James Jr.
Derwin James Jr. remains firmly in Tier 1. Few safeties offer his combination of size, athleticism and positional flexibility.
James can affect the game from multiple alignments, and his ability to handle coverage, tackling and pressure responsibilities keeps him near the top of the position.
Jessie Bates III
Jessie Bates III holds his Tier 1 position. His instincts, range and ability to read quarterbacks continue to make him one of the most trustworthy deep defenders in football.
Bates does not need constant highlight plays to justify his ranking. His consistency and ability to prevent mistakes on the back end remain major strengths.
Antoine Winfield Jr.
Antoine Winfield Jr. also stays in Tier 1. His complete skill set makes him valuable in virtually every situation a defense can ask of a safety.
Winfield can play deep, attack downhill, blitz and make tackles in space. That versatility keeps him safely inside the top group through Week 2.
Tier 2: Elite Safeties Just Outside the Top Tier
Tier 2 features Talanoa Hufanga, Jalen Pitre, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Kevin Byard, Xavier McKinney and Budda Baker.
Tier 2 remains extremely strong. Xavier McKinney is the notable mover here after dropping from Tier 1, while the rest of the group holds steady.
Talanoa Hufanga
Talanoa Hufanga stays in Tier 2 as one of the most aggressive safeties in football. His instincts and willingness to attack downhill allow him to create disruption around the line of scrimmage.
He remains close to Tier 1 territory, but the top group has separated itself slightly through the first two weeks.
Jalen Pitre
Jalen Pitre remains in Tier 2. His physical style and versatility allow him to contribute as a tackler, underneath defender and movable secondary piece.
Pitre has maintained his position rather than making a dramatic early-season move, which is still a strong result given the competition around him.
Minkah Fitzpatrick
Minkah Fitzpatrick holds his Tier 2 ranking. His anticipation, range and experience continue to make him one of the better coverage safeties in the league.
There has been no tier movement through Week 2, keeping him just outside the top group.
Kevin Byard
Kevin Byard remains in Tier 2 because of his awareness and ability to diagnose plays from the back end. He continues to provide the type of veteran stability that helps a secondary stay organized.
His ranking has not changed, which keeps him among the strongest safeties outside Tier 1.
Xavier McKinney
Xavier McKinney has dropped one tier, moving from Tier 1 to Tier 2. It is the most notable downward move near the top of the ranking.
McKinney is still firmly among the league’s best safeties, but the first two weeks have created enough separation for Julian Love to move past him into the top group.
Budda Baker
Budda Baker remains in Tier 2. His range, toughness and tackling continue to give him high-level value despite no movement in either direction.
Baker remains one of the most reliable players at the position and is still within striking distance of Tier 1.
Tier 3: High-End Starters and Major Risers
Tier 3 features Calen Bullock, Alohi Gilman, Jaquan Brisker, Evan Williams, Jevon Holland, Bryan Cook and Jalen Ramsey.
Tier 3 contains some of the most important movement in the ranking. Alohi Gilman, Jaquan Brisker, Evan Williams and Jevon Holland have all climbed, making this one of the strongest upward-trending tiers.
Calen Bullock
Calen Bullock remains in Tier 3 after beginning the season as one of the more intriguing young safeties on the list. His range and coverage upside keep him in strong standing.
He has not moved tiers, but holding a Tier 3 spot this early still shows how highly his current level is being viewed.
Alohi Gilman
Alohi Gilman has climbed two tiers into Tier 3. That is one of the more significant early jumps and represents a major improvement from his previous placement.
Gilman has moved from the middle of the ranking into high-end starter territory through Week 2.
Jaquan Brisker
Jaquan Brisker is one of the biggest risers on the board, jumping three tiers into Tier 3.
A three-tier rise this early is a strong statement. Brisker has gone from the lower half of the previous ranking to a position among the league’s better-performing safeties so far.
Evan Williams
Evan Williams has climbed two tiers and now sits in Tier 3. His rise continues the strong early trajectory that made him one of the more interesting young safeties entering the season.
Moving up two tiers after only two weeks shows how quickly his early performance has changed his standing.
Jevon Holland
Jevon Holland moves one tier up into Tier 3. His athleticism and coverage range have always suggested a higher ceiling, and the early season has helped him move closer to that level.
The jump is not as dramatic as some others in this tier, but moving upward is still an encouraging sign.
Bryan Cook
Bryan Cook remains in Tier 3. His physical style and dependable play continue to give him value without producing a tier change through Week 2.
Holding position in such a competitive tier is a positive start.
Jalen Ramsey

Grant Delpit
Grant Delpit remains in Tier 5. His physical ability and tackling give him value, but through Week 2 he has not done enough to move into the higher groups.

Justin Reid

Malik Hooker
Malik Hooker remains in Tier 7. His experience and range still give him value, but the first two weeks have not changed his position.
Josh Metellus
