#5 – Calvin Johnson
While not as severe as a what if case as Josh Gordon, I always imagine what Megatron’s career would have been like if he wasn’t on the lowly Lions. Regardless, even behind the teams dysfunction, Calvin Johnson was a record breaking Wide Receiver.
This was the best of his career as he averaged an astounding 122 receiving yards per game. What makes it even better were the catches that followed. He passes the eye test and more as he earned his catches in an impressive fashion with highlight catches.
The reason he isn’t higher is because of the 5 touchdowns. How can someone this tall and this good at going up and getting the football only have 5 touchdowns on nearly 2000 receiving yards? That can be credited to defenses playing him like a punt returner in the redzone sometimes finding two players lined up 1 yard off him to jam him up and take him out of the play.
#4 – Antonio Brown
You can hate Antonio Brown as a person all you want, but to say he is not one of the best Wide Receivers ever is ignorant. He earned a reputation as one of the hardest working practice players in the game and what follows is an extremely impressive resume.
Spoiler Alert: I could have included multiple AB seasons on this list, but this was the one I chose. This was his highest reception and yards total of his career as he battled Julio Jones for the title of best Wide Receiver in the NFL. This was also him cementing the title of Tony Toe Tap as there was not a single WR as dangerous near the sideline.
#3 – Julio Jones
What a year it was for WRs in 2015. I just included the Antonio Brown season from 2015, now it’s the Julio Jones season. Once again Julio Jones has one-upped AB.
You could make a case that Antonio Brown’s season was more impressive, and you have reason to. They tied for receptions, but it was AB with more touchdowns. But then you have to consider it was Julio Jones that bested him in yards and for me the eye test. Again, at this point you’re picking at straws, but just looking at the two I think that Julio Jones looked the best. He made more impressive plays and looked like the more superior of the two (by very little).
