#2 – Derrick Henry
After last season I included Derrick Henry as #10 on my top 10 running backs list. People were losing it! “How can he be on this list with only 4 good game!?!?” Another victory lap for me! He didn’t begin the year as the bellcow and gained half of his 1k rushing yards in the last 4 games of the season, but you could see that this Titans team was completely different with the offense running through him.
He brought that dominance late in the season right into the 2019 season. If the Tennessee Titans didn’t have Derrick Henry they wouldn’t even be sniffing the playoffs. He is that good.
We saw it time and time again where players just did not want to tackle him. It almost looked too easy on film as he isn’t fancy, but an extremely efficient downhill runner. He gets you yards and doesn’t make mistakes and was a perfect fit for this mistake free offense. When it gets cold, it’s even worse as Henry just wears on defenses.
While he can take a screen pass to the house, for Henry to become the best RB in the NFL he has to be able to be more effective as a pass catcher.
#1 – Christian McCaffrey
For some of these top 10 lists, I have to make a tough call for #1, but this one was easy. A no brainer. Christian McCaffrey was the best running back in the NFL last season, and I don’t even know how people argue against that.
After breaking the record for most catches by a running back in a season in 2018, he decided to do it again in 2019 with 116. This season he was 1st in receiving yards, receptions, and total touchdowns for running backs as well as 3rd for rushing yards. He carried the load in both the rushing and passing game for this team which leads me to believe this Panthers team would be a laughing stock without him.
Christian McCaffrey can do it all offensively and I honestly believe he would be an elite slot receiver if he made the switch. But please don’t. He is a unicorn and breaking the mold for what people think when talking about “white running backs”. Talent is talent and McCaffrey will look to be the leader of this team with Teddy Bridgewater at the helm.
