#2 – Deion Sanders
When Deion Sanders wasn’t locking down Wide Receivers and being the best cornerback in the NFL, he was putting in work returning both punts and kicks.
He had a flair for the dramatic with his flashy eye catching returns. It was insult to injury as he showed off being one of the fastest NFL players as he high stepped his way into the endzone.
There is no telling the damage he could have done if he was dedicated to being a full-time returner, but he was a man of many talents. This was a freakish athlete who even found himself playing Wide Receiver during his days. If he returned the ball full-time, i’d place my bets as him being the best returner ever.
#1 – Devin Hester
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and even if you disagree with me I respect whatever you have to say. In that same breath, if you don’t think Devin Hester is the best returner in NFL history, your opinion is objectively wrong.
There have been lists where it’s hard for me to decide on the #1 spot, but this is not one of them. Devin Hester was on a level of his own when it came to his ability as a kick and punt returner.
His record breaking 14 punt return touchdowns shattered the previous record of 10. He also added 5 kickoff return touchdown to bring his total return touchdowns to 19 which also shattered the previous record of 13. Add his missed field goal return for a touchdown as well as an iconic Super Bowl kickoff return touchdown which both don’t count towards the above records.
His impact in the return game was like no other and I know it’s early, but his record looks untouchable. There was no returner who ever had kickers and punters kicking away from them as much as Devin Hester and it’s clear why. Devin Hester is the best returner in NFL history.
