#5 – Jalen Ramsey
When you talk as much trash as Jalen Ramsey, you paint a massive target on your back. A lot of people hate him, but strictly talking about his play on the field, I still think he is one of the elites.
People really don’t recognize him for the complete player that he is. From man coverage, to zone coverage, to sticking your nose in and making the tackle. He frequently shadows the top Wide Receivers on either side which most top Cornerbacks will not do.
Jalen Ramsey has it all and has the competitive nature which many people misconstrue as toxic. This was an off-year for Ramsey at his standards, but he went from one under-performing team to another while battling injury. The Rams are still a solid team who should be trending upward next season. Ramsey will be at the helm of this defense that should take a massive step forward from their disappointing 2019 season.
#4 – Marcus Peters
Many people in my comments were talking about how Marlon Humphrey is better than Marcus Peters, but I don’t see it. This is no knock on Humphrey, but Marcus Peters in only 5 seasons already has 27 interceptions and 6 defensive touchdowns.
The Ravens got him in an absolute steal of a trade and it has already paid off. Question his attitude, but not his game. Here is where it gets tricky. He makes massive plays by taking risks.
Marcus Peters is a master at jumping routes and turning it into points going the other way. That can also be to his detriment as he has a tendency to get beat by double moves. The yin to his yang. To me, the good far outweighs the bad, and I think he can still find a more healthy balance of the two which can elevate his level even more.
#3 – Richard Sherman
Too many people hate on Richard Sherman. Way too many. This was a resurgence for Sherman as he helped elevate this 49ers defense to a new level. PFF ranked Sherman as the #1 ranked Cornerback yet the casual fan only points to his bad performance from a single game. He struggled in the Super Bowl, but that was against the most dangerous offense in the NFL.
The Cornerback position might be the most reliant on a players athletic profile. At 31 years old, Richard Sherman is far from the fastest guy on the field, so how does he still compete at the highest level? It’s football IQ. Hate all you want, this is the smartest CB in the game.
You can call him a Zone Coverage only guy all you want, but what makes him so special is his ability to disguise both coverages. His IQ trumps his athleticism and he constantly finds himself in position to make a play because of that IQ. He isn’t lucky, he doesn’t just rely on zone coverage, he is just that good.
