Too many people over credit the new era of dunkers and forget about the pioneer of dunking and the sport of basketball. Julius Erving dominated his era and changed the way basketball was played forever.
In its final season, the ABA decided to introduce the first All-Star Game Dunk Championship, before its merger with the NBA. Dr. J outperformed each of his competitors with feats never before seen, including his iconic dunk from the free-throw line, becoming the first player to take home the award.
Erving would go on to join the NBA the next season, carrying his individual expression and distinctive style of play with him throughout his 11-year career with the 76ers.
#3 – Michael Jordan
One of the most recognizable and iconic athletes in the history of sports checks in as a top 3 dunker in nba history. The greatest basketball player of all-time inherently possessed elite dunking ability which propelled him to superstardom.
From recreating Dr. J’s iconic dunk from the free-throw line, to his numerous posters and mid-air adjustments, his airness helped transform the nba into the global phenomenon it is today. It’s only right that his global brand dawns a logo from his historic tongue out dunk. His Dunk Contest vs Dominique Wilkins in 1988 is still one of the greatest ever.
