#3 – Jalen Ramsey
The days of Jalen Ramsey owning the best cornerback title are over. Not that he completely fell off, but there is a new king at the Cornerback position.
A lot of blame can be directed at the Rams defense as a whole. This has always been a very top heavy unit, and once Aaron Donald was injured, the pass rush was horrendous. If you’re not putting pressure on the Quarterback, it is nearly impossible to play cornerback.
Jalen Ramsey got a lot of hate from fans this season. He loves to talk smack, so it’s only fitting hate was directed his way with any semblance of struggle. That being said, I still think he is elite. Put him on a team like the Eagles and I’m confident he would perform like the league’s best Cornerback.
#2 – Patrick Surtain
Shoutout to Patrick Surtain Sr. Your son is an absolute best of a Cornerback.
Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos offense was hot garbage this year. They couldn’t get anything done and completely relied on their defense to carry them. They did rise to the occasion as the Denver Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL. Patrick Surtain deserves a lot of credit for that.
Teams were afraid to throw to Patrick Surtain. He was one of the least targeted Cornerbacks in the NFL this season. You can’t pad the stats with those lack of targets. That’s why advanced metrics are so important to look at when measuring a Cornerbacks production. That and the eye test and Patrick Surtain passed both.
#1 – Sauce Gardner
Aside from having one of the best nicknames in the NFL, Sauce Gardner was the best cornerback in the NFL. While I rarely like crowning rookie players so early in their career, I think this is warranted.
The New York Jets have been laughing stocks of the league for many years. This year was not one of them. Sauce was their first overall pick this season and he rose to the occasion completely changing the landscape of this team.
It’s a common them for elite cornerbacks. You need to be physical. Sauce Gardner was just that. You can’t let Wide Receivers get a free release. You need to get hands on them and disrupt the timing. Many argue Sauce Gardner should have been penalized more, but that’s easy for you to say watching a slow motion replay.
What makes him so special is his ability to play any type of coverage. He can make plays in off-man, press man, zone coverage, it doesn’t matter. It’s the new era of the NFL where young players are already so well coached that they can play in the big league.
Sauce Gardner just had one of the most impressive rookie seasons for a Cornerback ever. I’m extremely excited to see his development going forward.
